Our Credentials

Horizon is the premier mud logging company in Oklahoma, having logged over 5,000 wells in our 22-year history. We are one of the larges firms in the U.S., with operations in the mid-continent, Appalachia, Texas and the Rockies. We have 85 mud logging trailers deployed across the country and the cumulative experience of our loggers exceeds 250 years of service.  Our quality and technology are second to none.  Contact Horizon today for a proposal and find out how we can significantly improve the information you get from the well site.

Our Process

Our typical service profile for one-man mud logging service consists of a number of activities:

  • We mobilize our trailer to the site, set up our equipment and establish the job site presence.
  • Prior to mud logging depth, we examine the geological prognosis and communicate with the geologist and Operator personnel to establish a plan for success.
  • When appropriate, we provide technical consulting services to assist the geologist and Operator personnel in identifying formations as they are encountered.  This consulting typically consists of a short visit to the site each day to examine samples collected and review the drill time and gas data.  It results in a verbal report to the geologist rather than a mud log.
  • Once drilling reaches mud logging depth, we begin mud logging service. Using the samples caught by the rig hands and correlation logs provided by the customer, we identify each formation encountered during drilling.  Each morning we produce a mud log and morning report for customer personnel  to keep them fully informed of progress and issues encountered during drilling.  Upon request, we email reports to the customer's distribution list so that all appropriate parties (e.g., working interest owners) receive a daily update.
  • As we approach the pay zone, communication with the geologist increases to help ensure success in identifying and penetrating the target .
  • Upon completion of drilling, we rig down our equipment and remove our trailer from the site.
  • Following well completion, we produce a final mud log for the well and distribute that log electronically and, if desired, on paper. We also index and box the samples and forward them to the customer's designated recipient.

In addition to one man service, we offer 24-hour service that provides continuous mud logger presence at the well site.

Our Tools

Our work at the site is supported by the latest in mud logging equipment and technology. We use state-of-the-art Bloodhound gas chromatography equipment made by iBall Instruments. This equipment allows remote viewing over the Internet of real-time information that includes drill depth, rate of penetration and gas readings. If there is a WITS-compatible interface at the well site, we also provide real-time viewing of nearly all data streams in the WITS standard through a single user interface.

To produce and print mud logs, we use WellSight v6 software—the industry standard for mud logs. WellSight provides a free viewer that allows all of your geologists or other interested parties to view the daily mud logs. It also allows you to print the mud logs on any Windows-based printer and even provides for color printing if you so desire.

Our Quality

Embedded within our process are extensive quality control procedures to ensure mud logs are accurate and informative.  Each daily mud log is reviewed by and discussed with a field supervisor to ensure geological integrity.  Every mud log is also reviewed by an independent quality control department to ensure it meets Horizon's standards for layout, format and content.  Final mud logs receive an additional quality review prior to printing to ensure they include the information and identification that are appropriate for an archival record.
